Jamie
Consultant
I work as a consultant at Hakluyt and Company. We help clients answer the qualitative questions that underpin their business, the "known unknowns". The company is centred in London, I'm based in Sydney, and we have eight (soon to be nine) offices around the world.
My approach to careers was to emphasise gaining new and diverse experiences rather than ticking boxes. I think that has worked out ok in the end! I worked as a live-in English teacher in France when I finished school at 17, before returning to study Arts and Laws at the University of Sydney. I was then lucky enough to be offered a spot doing a PhD in History at the University of Cambridge, and walking away from the legal track was a straightforward decision.
From there, I worked in academia in the United States for a few years, for an up-and-coming politician there, for McKinsey and Company in Australia, before Hakluyt went out into the market looking for someone with a particular and diverse range of skills and experiences--me! I really enjoy both the work and the people. The work involves us thinking about what is really going on in the world and providing our clients with insight that they really can't get elsewhere. And I get to do that while working with broad-minded, well-travelled, and curious individuals. Importantly for me, I feel like I grow and develop as a person while doing the job, rather than having to do these in my spare time on the weekend and at night.
