Application FAQs
Who is Decade On for?
We help young adults from all backgrounds – no one is excluded from our services based on ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion or for any other reason. If you are from a minority group and feel like your career path ahead feels harder than it should, we would warmly welcome your application.
While open to everyone, our mentoring services are particularly focused on helping those who might not otherwise have access to advice and networks that our mentors can provide. If you already have access to good careers services and networks – for example if you attended an independent or fee-paying school – we would kindly ask you to consider whether our services are right for you.
If you are unsure about whether Decade On can help you, or have any questions at all, why not just drop us an email? We're always here to help: info@decadeon.com.
What makes a good candidate?
A good Decade On mentee is someone who is hardworking and ambitious, yet doesn't know exactly how to translate those qualities into being able to land a top job.
Is Decade On right for me?
Decade On may be able to help you, if you are...
A young adult (18+), based in the UK*, looking for careers advice
Thinking about planning your future career, or are at the start of your career and needing some guidance
Having aspirations of landing a top job, but just not quite sure how to achieve that
Looking for someone to help your understand what it's like to work in a certain industry
* As we are a UK charity, our services are limited to those who have grown up and are based in the UK.
Is anyone prohibited from using your services?
Decade On does not currently provide any service to children (under 18).
Does it cost anything to have a mentor?
No, our services are completely free!
How do I choose a mentor?
We suggest that you look through the mentors in the sector you're interested in and pick someone you think you will connect with/get along with. Don’t worry if you don’t understand exactly what your preferred mentor does, we understand that their jobs might seem a bit niche! There will be plenty of time for them to explain more about what they do during your mentoring sessions.
Can I have more than one mentor?
We only provide one mentor per mentee. This is to ensure that we are able to provide mentoring assistance to a large number of young adults.
Why does the application form ask me to select three mentors?
Even though we only offer one mentor per mentee, we ask that you put down your top three mentors in your application, in order of preference. This allows for the greatest chance of us being able to match you with a mentor.
Why does the application form have minimum word limits?
Writing a little bit about yourself and your situation really helps us match you up with a suitable mentor. Having a minimum limit encourages applicants to think about their situation and what they are looking for.
How will the application be assessed?
We ask that you fill in all parts of the application form and pay attention to the word limits. We will prioritise applications which have followed the requirements accurately. We also request that you have read and considered the FAQs before applying.
Will all applications be successful?
Unfortunately not. There may be some instances where your application does not meet all our requirements. If your preferred mentors are not able to take you on as their mentee, we will try to suggest an alternative mentor based on your application, but this is not always possible.
How long will the application process take?
We try to match you with a mentor within two weeks, however the process can take a little longer where first choice mentors are not available. We ask that you are patient during this time. However, if you do not hear back from us within two weeks, please email us at info@decadeon.com
