Diplomat at UK's Embassy to the EU

I work in the Prime Minister's taskforce negotiating our free trade agreement with the EU. I've done a wide variety of jobs in the civil service: working on economic policy at the UK embassy in Brussels; coordinating the cross-government response to cyber threats; and developing policy on issues from labour law to recycling.

I’ve always been interested in current affairs and liked the idea of working in an international environment. I did French and Spanish at university, and spent a year out in Paris (teaching) and Madrid (interning at the BBC). I was never fantastic at languages (not enough to have them as the main focus of my work) but I learnt enough to chat easily to people I met, and realised I definitely wanted to travel and live abroad.

I then studied Management and went into strategy consulting for a while, but didn’t enjoy it much, so I joined the Civil Service Fast Stream. I might not like everything the government does, but there are thousands of roles out there, and we can change regularly. Trying to solve the everyday problems that affect citizens’ lives is fascinating – genuinely every day a different challenge.
