Real Estate VAT consultant

Until relatively recently I was undecided in the career I wanted to pursue. I had studied German language, history and politics at University where I first discovered a strong interest in undertaking challenging research projects. Unsure of how to apply this in a career, I applied to a number of graduate schemes / roles across various fields.

I was successful in obtaining a role as a VAT inspector in HMRC which fortunately, I thoroughly enjoyed as it provided me with an opportunity to investigate the challenging VAT position of various entities. However, after three years I was ready for a new challenge and moved to the private sector, spending two years in KPMG’s Real Estate VAT team before moving to Deloitte’s Real Estate VAT team in early 2019.

My current work comprises mainly of advising clients of the VAT implications of large real estate acquisitions and developments, undertaking VAT due diligence for clients looking to acquire properties or property holding entities and advising on VAT structuring. Day-to-day this requires a comprehensive knowledge and application of the relevant UK and EU VAT legislation, case law and HMRC policy.

Outside of work I have 2 year old twin daughters and as a result made the most of the flexible working policies both at KPMG and Deloitte. I enjoy travelling and challenging sports, particularly rock climbing, skiing and scuba / free diving. Prior to University I worked as a scuba diving instructor in Malta for two summer seasons.

What I can help you with:

  • How to get a job in the civil service

  • How to get a job as an experienced hire in big 4 firms

  • Benefits of working in private vs public sector

  • Approaching leaving the public sector for a private sector role

  • How to balance work and family responsibilities
